Installation

Unpack and inspect all components. Ensure proper location with adequate clearance.

  1. Position furnace: Place on level surface in approved location (closet, attic, basement).
  2. Connect gas supply: Use approved black iron pipe with sediment trap; check for leaks.
  3. Connect electrical: 120V AC power supply with proper grounding and disconnect switch.
  4. Connect venting: Use approved PVC pipe for intake and exhaust; maintain proper slope.
  5. Connect ductwork: Attach supply and return ducts; ensure proper sealing.
  6. Connect condensate drain: Route to approved drain with proper trap.

WARNING! Installation must comply with local codes and be performed by qualified technician. Gas leaks can cause explosion or fire.

First-Time Setup

After installation, perform initial startup and configuration.

  1. Verify all connections: Gas, electrical, venting, ductwork, and drain.
  2. Set blower speed: Adjust dip switches on control board for proper CFM.
  3. Configure thermostat: Install compatible thermostat and set to heat mode.
  4. Power on furnace: Turn on gas supply and electrical power.
  5. Test operation: Initiate heating cycle and verify proper ignition and airflow.
  6. Check safety controls: Verify pressure switches, flame sensor, and limit switches function.

CAUTION! Never bypass safety controls. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

Specifications

Controls and Settings

Access control board behind front panel. LED status light indicates system condition.

Control Board: Integrated microprocessor with diagnostic codes. Dip switches for blower speed, heating stages, and thermostat type.

Settings: Blower speed (COOL, HEAT, FAN), heating stages (single or two-stage with proper thermostat), fan delay (adjustable), thermostat type (conventional or communicating). Diagnostic codes: LED flash patterns indicate normal operation (steady on), lockout (specific flash counts), or fault conditions.

Connecting Components

Thermostat: 2-5 wire connection (R, W, G, Y, C). Venting: PVC pipes for intake and exhaust. Gas: ½" or ¾" black iron with shutoff valve.

  1. Turn off power and gas supply before making connections.
  2. Match wires to terminal designations (R=24V power, W=Heat, G=Fan, Y=Cool, C=Common).
  3. Ensure vent pipes slope downward away from furnace (¼" per foot minimum).
  4. Gas line must include drip leg and approved shutoff valve.

Tip: Use pipe sealant approved for gas on all threaded connections. Test for leaks with soap solution.

Operation Modes

Heating, cooling (with AC coil), and fan-only modes.

  1. Heating cycle: Thermostat calls for heat, inducer motor starts, pressure switches prove, ignitor heats, gas valve opens, flame sensor confirms, blower starts after delay.
  2. Cooling cycle (with AC): Thermostat calls for cool, outdoor unit starts, blower operates at cooling speed.
  3. Fan-only: Thermostat or manual fan switch activates blower without heating/cooling.
  4. Variable-speed operation: Blower ramps up/down for optimal comfort and efficiency.
  5. Safety shutdown: If fault detected (no flame, overheat, vent blockage), system locks out with diagnostic code.

WARNING! Do not operate without proper venting or with blocked air filters. Carbon monoxide hazard exists.

Maintenance

Annual maintenance by qualified technician recommended.

  1. Replace air filter: Monthly during heating season (standard 1" or 4" media filter).
  2. Clean flame sensor: Annually with fine sandpaper or steel wool.
  3. Inspect heat exchanger: Annual visual inspection for cracks or corrosion.
  4. Clean condensate drain: Flush with water/vinegar solution to prevent algae.
  5. Check vent system: Ensure no blockage or deterioration of PVC pipes.
  6. Lubrication: ECM motor is permanently lubricated; no user service required.

Care & Cleaning

Turn off power before cleaning. Vacuum interior annually. Keep area around furnace clear.

CAUTION! Do not use water or cleaning chemicals inside furnace. Keep flammable materials away from unit.

Regulatory Information

UL listed. ANSI Z21.47/CSA 2.3 compliant. Manufactured to meet U.S. Department of Energy efficiency standards. Installation must comply with National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54), National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), and local building codes. For support, visit www.americanstandard.com or contact 1-800-572-1111.
