Installation

Unpack and inspect all components. Ensure installation location meets clearance requirements.

  1. Select location: Install in a clean, dry area with proper combustion air and venting access.
  2. Mount furnace: Secure to a level platform or suspended from joists as per manual.
  3. Connect gas supply: Use approved black iron pipe; apply leak test solution to all joints.
  4. Connect electrical: Provide dedicated 120V AC circuit; connect low-voltage thermostat wires.
  5. Connect venting: Use approved PVC or metal vent pipe per local codes.
  6. Connect ductwork: Attach supply and return ducts securely; seal all joints.

WARNING! Installation must be performed by a qualified HVAC technician in accordance with all local codes. Gas leaks can cause fire or explosion.

First-Time Setup

After installation, perform initial startup and system check.

  1. Verify all connections: Gas, electrical, venting, and ductwork.
  2. Install air filter: Insert clean filter of correct size.
  3. Power on: Turn on electrical disconnect and gas supply valve.
  4. Set thermostat: Place in HEAT mode, set temperature above room temp.
  5. Observe startup: Listen for draft inducer, igniter, and burner sequence.
  6. Check operation: Verify warm air from vents and monitor for error codes on control board LED.

CAUTION! Do not bypass safety devices. If furnace fails to start or locks out, consult troubleshooting or a professional.

Specifications

Controls and Settings

Primary control is via the integrated furnace control board and connected thermostat.

Control Board: Features status LED for diagnostic codes (flash patterns). DIP switches may be present for configuration (heating capacity, fan control).

Thermostat Settings: Use compatible 24V thermostat. Set to HEAT mode, desired temperature. FAN setting can be AUTO (runs with heat cycle) or ON (continuous circulation).

Blower Speed Taps: Heating speed is factory set. Adjustment may be possible via motor module or control board for fine-tuning airflow (consult manual).

Gas Valve: Factory set for natural gas at specified manifold pressure. Do not adjust unless converting fuel type.

Connecting Thermostat

Connect a standard 24V thermostat to the furnace control board.

  1. Turn off power to furnace at disconnect switch.
  2. Remove access panel to expose control board.
  3. Locate thermostat terminals (typically R, W, G, Y, C).
  4. Run 18-gauge thermostat wire from furnace to thermostat location.
  5. Connect wires: R (24V power), W (Heat call), G (Fan call), C (Common). Y is for cooling (if applicable).
  6. Secure connections, replace panel, restore power.
  7. Program thermostat according to its manual.

Tip: Label wires at both ends for easier future service. Ensure thermostat is level and away from heat sources or drafts.

Operating Instructions

Normal operation is automatic via thermostat.

  1. Set thermostat to HEAT mode and desired temperature.
  2. Furnace initiates sequence: Draft inducer starts, pressure switch proves, igniter glows, gas valve opens, burner lights.
  3. After burner proves, blower starts after a brief delay.
  4. When thermostat is satisfied, gas valve closes, burner extinguishes. Blower continues for a post-purge period, then shuts off.
  5. For continuous fan, set thermostat FAN to ON. ECM motor will run at a low, efficient speed.

WARNING! Never block supply or return air vents. If you smell gas, turn off gas valve immediately, evacuate, and call gas company from outside.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Regular maintenance ensures safety, efficiency, and longevity. Schedule annual professional service.

Monthly: Check and replace air filter if dirty. A clean filter protects the heat exchanger and blower.

Annually (by qualified technician): Inspect heat exchanger for cracks, clean burners, check gas pressure and connections, clean flame sensor, check vent system, lubricate induced draft motor if required (sealed bearings typical), check electrical connections, verify safety controls.

CAUTION! Turn off electrical and gas supply before any maintenance. Only a qualified technician should open the burner compartment or adjust gas/electrical components.

Regulatory Information

This furnace complies with ANSI Z21.47/CSA 2.3 standards for gas-fired central furnaces. It is designed for Category IV venting. Installation must conform with National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54/ANSI Z223.1), local building codes, and manufacturer's instructions. For Canadian installations, refer to CSA B149.1. The furnace contains safety devices essential to safe operation. Do not disable. For support, contact American Standard Customer Care or a local authorized dealer.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Furnace won't startPower off, thermostat setting, gas valveCheck disconnect switch and circuit breaker. Verify thermostat is in HEAT mode, set above room temp. Ensure gas supply valve is on.
Blower runs but no heatIgnition failure, gas supplyObserve control board LED flash code. Check for gas supply. If lockout, may need to reset power. If repeated, call for service.
Furnace cycles on/off frequently (short cycles)Dirty filter, blocked vent, overheatingReplace air filter. Ensure all vents are unblocked. Check for restricted exhaust/intake piping.
Unusual noises (banging, rumbling)Delayed ignition, ductworkMay indicate burner issue. Turn off furnace and call for service.
Error code on control board LEDSystem faultRefer to fault code chart inside furnace panel or manual. Common codes: pressure switch, flame sense, limit switch.
Pilot/igniter lights but burner goes outFlame sensorFlame sensor may be dirty. Requires cleaning by technician.

Reset: For lockout, turn off power at disconnect for 30 seconds, then restore. If problem persists, call for service.
