Installation

Unpack and inspect unit for shipping damage. Select a level, stable outdoor location with adequate clearance.

  1. Position Condenser Unit: Place on a level concrete pad or approved support. Maintain minimum clearances (24" on all sides, 48" above).
  2. Connect Refrigerant Lines: Connect pre-charged, insulated lines from indoor unit to outdoor service valves. Braze connections using nitrogen purge.
  3. Connect Electrical: Run high-voltage power (240V) from disconnect to unit terminal block (L1, L2). Run low-voltage thermostat wire (Y, C, G, etc.) from indoor unit to control box terminal strip.
  4. Connect Condensate Drain: Ensure indoor unit drain line is properly routed and trapped.
  5. Evacuate and Charge: Evacuate system to 500 microns, then open service valves to release factory charge. Check and adjust charge per subcooling method.

WARNING! Installation must be performed by a qualified HVAC technician in accordance with all local codes and the National Electrical Code (NEC). Disconnect all power before servicing.

First-Time Setup & Startup

After installation, perform initial startup and system check.

  1. Power On: Ensure indoor unit power and outdoor disconnect are ON.
  2. Thermostat Setup: Set thermostat to OFF mode. Configure for conventional single-stage cooling (if applicable).
  3. Start Cooling: Set thermostat to COOL and temperature below room temp. Verify outdoor fan and compressor engage.
  4. Check Operation: Listen for abnormal noises. Verify adequate airflow from indoor registers. Check refrigerant pressures and superheat/subcooling.
  5. Register Product: Complete and mail warranty registration card or register online.

CAUTION! Do not operate without proper refrigerant charge. Ensure electrical connections are tight to prevent overheating.

Specifications

Controls and Operation

Primary control is via the indoor thermostat. Unit has internal protection controls.

Thermostat Functions: COOL, OFF, FAN (AUTO/ON). Set desired temperature.

Unit Controls & Protections: High-Pressure Switch: Protects against excessive discharge pressure. Low-Pressure Switch: Protects against loss of charge or low suction pressure. Compressor Crankcase Heater: Operates when unit is off to prevent refrigerant migration. Time Delay: Prevents rapid cycling of compressor (approx. 5-minute delay). Overload Protectors: In compressor and fan motor.

LED Status Light (on control board): Steady ON = normal operation. Flashing codes indicate specific faults (see Troubleshooting).

Connecting to Indoor Unit & Thermostat

This is a split system; requires a matched American Standard indoor coil/furnace or air handler.

  1. Turn OFF all power to indoor and outdoor units.
  2. Match Refrigerant Lines: Connect liquid (small) and suction (large, insulated) lines between units.
  3. Connect Low-Voltage Wires: At outdoor unit terminal strip, connect wires from indoor unit control board. Typical connections: Y (Cooling), C (Common), G (Fan), O/B (Reversing Valve - for heat pump models, not applicable if this is straight cool).
  4. Connect Thermostat: Wire thermostat to indoor unit control board per wiring diagram.

Tip: Use a zip tie to secure low-voltage wiring away from refrigerant lines and sharp edges. Ensure wire gauge is correct (typically 18 AWG).

Maintenance Procedures

For optimal performance and longevity, perform regular maintenance.

  1. Annual Professional Service: Have a qualified technician inspect refrigerant charge, electrical components, and system operation before each cooling season.
  2. Clean Outdoor Coil: Gently rinse coil with water from the inside out to remove dirt and debris. Turn power OFF first.
  3. Clear Area: Keep at least 2 feet around unit clear of vegetation, leaves, and obstructions.
  4. Inspect Fan: Ensure fan blades are clean and undamaged. Listen for unusual noises.
  5. Check Electrical: Technician should check contactor, capacitors, and connections for wear/corrosion.
  6. Indoor Unit: Replace air filter regularly (every 1-3 months). Clean indoor coil and drain line as needed.

WARNING! Always disconnect power at the disconnect switch before performing any maintenance. Do not attempt to repair refrigerant system.

Safety Features

High and Low Pressure Switches: Automatically shut off compressor if pressures exceed safe limits. Internal Thermal Overloads: Protect compressor and fan motor from overheating. Fuses/Circuit Breakers: Provide overcurrent protection in electrical circuit. Time Delay Relay: Prevents short cycling to protect compressor.

Care & Cleaning

Disconnect power before cleaning. Clean exterior cabinet with a damp cloth. Clean condenser coil annually with a garden hose (spray from inside coil outward). Keep the base of the unit free of grass clippings and debris.

CAUTION! Do not use a pressure washer, as it can bend fins. Do not use chemical cleaners unless specifically designed for AC coils.
