Installation

Unpack and inspect contents. Place on a level, stable outdoor pad.

  1. Position the unit: Ensure minimum clearances (24" on all sides, 48" above).
  2. Connect refrigerant lines: Braze liquid and suction lines to indoor coil. Use nitrogen purge.
  3. Connect electrical: Run high-voltage power (208/230V) from disconnect to unit. Connect low-voltage thermostat wires to control board.
  4. Connect condensate drain: Ensure proper drainage from indoor air handler.
  5. Evacuate and charge system: Pull deep vacuum, charge with R-410A per data plate specifications.

WARNING! Installation must be performed by a qualified HVAC technician. Incorrect installation can cause equipment damage, personal injury, or death. Follow all local codes and ordinances.

First-Time Setup & Startup

After installation, power on the system and configure settings.

  1. Power up: Turn on high-voltage disconnect and indoor unit power.
  2. Configure thermostat: Install and program compatible communicating thermostat (e.g., American Standard AccuLink™). Follow thermostat prompts for system setup.
  3. Verify operation: Set thermostat to cooling mode. The outdoor unit and indoor blower should start. Listen for normal operation sounds.
  4. Check system pressures & temperatures: Using manifold gauges, verify subcooling/superheat are within specified ranges.
  5. Test system modes: Test cooling, fan-only, and (if applicable) heating with a heat pump system.

CAUTION! Do not operate without proper refrigerant charge. Ensure all electrical connections are tight and covers are secured.

Specifications

Controls and Settings

Primary control is via the communicating thermostat. Unit has an onboard control board with DIP switches and LED diagnostics.

Thermostat Settings: Mode (Cool, Heat, Auto, Off), Fan (Auto, On), Temperature Setpoint, Schedules, Humidity Control, Alerts.

Unit DIP Switches (Access under service panel): May adjust fan delay, compressor protection settings (typically set at factory).

LED Status Lights (Control Board): Flash codes indicate system status (Normal, Lockout, Fault). Refer to label on panel for code definitions.

Connecting System Components

This condenser must be matched with an approved American Standard indoor unit (air handler or furnace coil) and thermostat.

  1. Turn off all power to indoor and outdoor units.
  2. Refrigerant Lines: Connect field-supplied insulated copper linesets (size per installation guidelines).
  3. Electrical: Connect high-voltage wires (L1, L2, Ground) from disconnect to contactor. Connect low-voltage communication wires (typically 4-conductor) from thermostat to outdoor unit control board.
  4. After connections are secure, replace all access panels before applying power.

Tip: Use a torque wrench on refrigerant service valves. Apply leak detection solution or use an electronic detector to check all connections.

Operation & Maintenance

For normal operation, use the thermostat. Regular maintenance is required for efficiency and longevity.

  1. Seasonal Startup: Clear debris from around unit, check coil for dirt, ensure condenser fan spins freely.
  2. Monthly: Visually inspect for refrigerant leaks, unusual noises, or ice formation.
  3. Annually (Professional Service): Clean condenser coils, check refrigerant charge, inspect electrical components, check amp draws, lubricate motors if required, check and clean drain line.
  4. Winterizing (if in cold climate): Consider using a protective cover (ensure it allows airflow if unit runs in heat pump mode).

WARNING! Always turn off power at the disconnect before performing any maintenance. The fan can start automatically. Keep fingers and tools away from moving parts.

Diagnostics & Alerts

The system monitors itself for faults. Alerts appear on the thermostat display. The outdoor unit's control board LEDs flash a code during a fault.

Common LED Flash Patterns: 1 Flash = Low Pressure Lockout, 2 Flashes = High Pressure Lockout, 3 Flashes = Compressor Overcurrent, 4 Flashes = Reversing Valve Fault, 5 Flashes = Low Voltage/Loss of Communication.

Thermostat Alerts: Check filter, loss of communication, system fault codes. Refer to thermostat manual for details.

Care & Cleaning

Keep the outdoor unit clean and unobstructed.

  1. Turn off power at the disconnect.
  2. Remove leaves, grass, and debris from the top and sides of the unit.
  3. Gently clean the condenser coil fins with a soft brush or low-pressure water from the inside out. Do not use a pressure washer.
  4. Straighten any bent coil fins with a fin comb.
  5. Ensure the base is clear of vegetation.

CAUTION! Do not use harsh chemicals or solvents. Do not spray water directly into the electrical compartment or fan motor.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Unit does not startPower off, tripped breaker, blown fuse, thermostat settingCheck disconnect and breakers. Verify thermostat is set to COOL and below room temp.
Unit runs but does not coolDirty filter/coils, low refrigerant, faulty compressorCheck/clean air filter and coils. Check for ice on lines. Call for professional service.
Unit cycles on/off frequently (short cycles)Dirty coils, overcharge/undercharge, restricted airflowClean outdoor coil. Check indoor airflow (filter, blower). Call for service.
Unusual noise (rattling, grinding)Loose parts, debris in fan, failing motor or compressorTurn off power. Check for loose screws or panels. Remove debris. If noise persists, call for service.
Ice on refrigerant lines or coilLow airflow (dirty filter/coil), low refrigerant chargeTurn system off. Let ice melt. Replace filter. If problem returns, call for service.
