Unpack and inspect unit for shipping damage. Select a suitable location.
WARNING! Installation and service must be performed by a qualified HVAC technician. Disconnect all power before servicing. Improper installation can cause injury, equipment damage, or void warranty.
After installation, perform system commissioning.
CAUTION! Do not operate without correct refrigerant charge. Do not bypass safety controls.
Unit operation is controlled by the indoor thermostat. No user controls on outdoor unit.
Thermostat Settings: User sets mode (COOL, OFF, HEAT if heat pump), fan (AUTO, ON), and desired temperature.
Unit Sequence: On a call for cooling, thermostat energizes the contactor in the outdoor unit. Compressor and fan start after a short time delay. Unit runs until thermostat is satisfied.
Safety Controls (Automatic): - High Pressure Switch: Opens on excessively high discharge pressure, shutting off compressor. - Low Pressure Switch: Opens on low suction pressure (loss of charge or restriction). - Compressor Overload: Internal protector opens on overheating. - Anti-Short Cycle Timer: Prevents compressor from restarting for approximately 5 minutes after shutdown.
Refer to wiring diagram on unit control box cover.
Tip: Use copper conductors only. Torque all electrical connections to specifications.
Charge system using subcooling method for TXV systems. Refer to charging chart on service panel.
WARNING! Use only R-410A refrigerant. System operates at higher pressures than R-22. Use dedicated R-410A gauges and equipment. Do not vent refrigerant.
Annual maintenance by a qualified technician is recommended.
Owner Maintenance: - Keep area around unit clear of debris, leaves, and vegetation (min 24" clearance). - Gently clean exterior coil fins with a soft brush or low-pressure water hose (power off). Do not bend fins. - Ensure the condensate drain from the indoor unit is clear.
Technician Maintenance: - Inspect electrical connections for tightness and corrosion. - Check refrigerant charge and system pressures. - Inspect coil for cleanliness and fin condition. - Check fan motor and blades. - Lubricate bearings if not permanently sealed. - Verify proper operation of all safety controls.
Turn off power at disconnect before any cleaning.
Coil Cleaning: Use a soft brush to remove loose debris. For heavier dirt, use a commercial coil cleaner according to its instructions, then rinse gently with water from the inside out. Do not use high-pressure water.
Cabinet: Wipe with a damp cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasives.
CAUTION! Do not spray water directly into electrical components (control box, fan motor). Do not straighten coil fins with a sharp object; use a fin comb.
This product complies with applicable U.S. safety and performance standards. The compressor is covered by a 10-year limited warranty. Other parts are covered by a 5-year limited warranty. The warranty is valid only if the unit is installed by a qualified technician according to these instructions and registered with American Standard. | Symptom | Possible Cause | Corrective Action |
|---|---|---|
| Unit does not start | No power, blown fuse, tripped breaker, thermostat setting, safety lockout | Check disconnect and breaker. Verify thermostat is in COOL, set below room temp. Wait 5 mins for anti-short cycle. Check safety switches. |
| Unit runs but does not cool | Dirty filter/coils, low refrigerant, faulty compressor | Check/clean indoor filter and outdoor coil. Check refrigerant charge. Listen for compressor operation. |
| Unit cycles on/off frequently (short cycles) | Dirty coil, overcharge, restricted airflow, faulty pressure switch | Clean coils. Check refrigerant charge. Check indoor airflow (filter, blower). |
| Loud or unusual noise | Loose parts, debris in fan, failing motor or compressor | Turn off power. Check for loose panels, screws. Remove debris from fan. If internal, call for service. |
| Ice on refrigerant lines or coil | Low airflow, low refrigerant charge | Turn system off. Check/change air filter. Check for blocked registers. Check refrigerant charge after thaw. |
Reset: Turn thermostat to OFF. Turn off power at disconnect for 5 minutes. Restore power and thermostat.
