Installation Requirements

Unit must be installed by a qualified HVAC technician in accordance with all local codes and ordinances.

  1. Location: Place on a level, stable, vibration-absorbing pad (concrete or approved composite). Ensure minimum clearances: 24" front, 12" rear/sides, 48" above for airflow and service.
  2. Electrical: Connect to a dedicated, properly fused and grounded circuit. Install a field-supplied weatherproof electrical disconnect within sight of the unit.
  3. Refrigerant Lines: Connect matched, insulated copper linesets between outdoor unit and indoor coil. Brazing with nitrogen purge is required to prevent contamination.
  4. Condensate Drain: Ensure indoor coil condensate drain line is properly installed and trapped.

WARNING! Installation and service must be performed by a qualified technician. Incorrect installation can cause property damage, personal injury, or death. Disconnect all power before servicing.

First-Time Startup & Commissioning

After installation, the system must be commissioned by a technician.

  1. Pre-Start Check: Verify all electrical connections are tight and correct. Ensure refrigerant lines are connected, insulated, and not kinked. Check that the condensate drain is clear.
  2. Power On: Restore power at the disconnect and indoor unit.
  3. System Check: Set indoor thermostat to "Cool" mode and a temperature below room temp. The outdoor fan and compressor should start. Listen for unusual noises.
  4. Measurements: Technician must measure and record: Superheat, Subcooling, System pressures, Voltage/Amperage, Temperature drop across indoor coil.
  5. Finalize: Adjust refrigerant charge if necessary per manufacturer guidelines. Secure service panel.

CAUTION! Do not operate the unit without the service panels securely in place.

Specifications

Controls and Operation

Primary control is via the indoor thermostat. The outdoor unit has an internal control board for protection and operation.

Thermostat Operation: Set to COOL mode and desired temperature. The thermostat signals the indoor fan and outdoor unit to cycle on/off to maintain setpoint.

Outdoor Unit Controls: Includes high and low-pressure switches, compressor overload protection, time-delay relay (typically 5 minutes) to prevent short cycling, and fan cycle control.

LED Diagnostic Light: Located on the control board inside the service panel. Flashing patterns indicate specific operational status or fault conditions (see Troubleshooting section).

Connecting to Indoor Unit

This unit is designed as a "split system" and must be connected to a matched indoor coil (and furnace or air handler).

  1. Lineset Connection: Connect vapor (suction) and liquid refrigerant lines between outdoor unit valves and indoor coil. Use correct line size per installation instructions.
  2. Electrical Connection: Run low-voltage control wiring (typically 18/5 cable) from the outdoor unit's control terminal block to the indoor unit's control board (R, Y, C, O/B, G terminals as applicable).
  3. Thermostat: Connect indoor control board to a compatible thermostat.

Tip: Always refer to the installation instructions for the specific indoor unit for correct wiring and piping diagrams.

Maintenance Procedures

Regular maintenance by a qualified technician is required for efficiency and longevity.

  1. Annual Professional Service: Includes: Inspect refrigerant charge and lines, Check electrical components and connections, Clean condenser coil, Check fan motor and blades, Verify proper operation of safety controls.
  2. Homeowner Maintenance (Monthly during season): Ensure outdoor unit is free of debris (leaves, grass clippings). Gently rinse condenser coil with a garden hose (power OFF) if dirty. Keep shrubs and plants at least 24" away for airflow.
  3. Winterizing: In cold climates, consider installing a weatherproof cover to prevent ice/snow accumulation in the fan area. Do not run the unit in cooling mode when outdoor temps are below 55°F.

WARNING! Always turn OFF electrical power at the disconnect before performing any maintenance near the unit. Do not insert fingers or tools into the fan area.

Safety Features

High-Pressure Switch: Shuts off compressor if discharge pressure is excessive. Low-Pressure Switch: Shuts off compressor if suction pressure is too low. Compressor Overload Protector: Internal thermal protection. Time-Delay Relay: Prevents compressor short-cycling. Fused Disconnect: Required field-installed component for electrical safety.

Care & Cleaning

Keep the outdoor unit clear of obstructions. Clean the condenser coil annually or as needed.

Procedure: Turn power OFF. Remove the top guard/fan grille if designed for removal. Use a soft brush or low-pressure water spray to remove dirt and debris from the fins. Straighten any bent fins with a fin comb.

CAUTION! Do not use a pressure washer, as it can damage the delicate fins. Do not use chemical cleaners unless specified by the manufacturer.

Regulatory Information

This product complies with applicable U.S. safety and performance standards. It contains R-410A refrigerant. Federal law requires that refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment be used by certified technicians when servicing this unit. The compressor oil is POE (Polyolester).
