Installation Requirements

Unpack and inspect unit for shipping damage. Select a suitable outdoor location.

  1. Foundation: Place on a level, stable pad (concrete or composite).
  2. Clearances: Maintain minimum 24 inches clearance on all sides, 48 inches above for service.
  3. Electrical Connection: Connect to dedicated 230V circuit with proper disconnect and fusing as per local codes.
  4. Refrigerant Lines: Connect to matched indoor unit using clean, dehydrated copper lines.
  5. Condensate Drain: Ensure proper drainage from indoor unit.

WARNING! Installation must be performed by a qualified HVAC technician. Incorrect installation can cause injury, property damage, or unit failure.

First-Time Setup & Startup

After installation, perform initial startup and system check.

  1. Power Verification: Ensure electrical power is OFF at the disconnect.
  2. Thermostat Setup: Install compatible thermostat and set to OFF mode.
  3. System Check: Technician to verify refrigerant charge, electrical connections, and airflow.
  4. Initial Startup: Turn power ON at disconnect. Set thermostat to COOL mode and a temperature below room temp to initiate cooling cycle.
  5. Performance Verification: Check for proper cooling, listen for abnormal noises, verify condensate drainage.

CAUTION! Do not operate the system without proper refrigerant charge or with blocked airflow. Ensure all access panels are securely in place before operation.

Specifications

Controls and Operation

Primary control is via the indoor thermostat. The outdoor unit has no user-accessible controls.

Thermostat Operation: Set to COOL, HEAT (if connected to furnace/heat pump), FAN (ON/AUTO), and adjust temperature setpoint.

Normal Cycle: When thermostat calls for cooling, the indoor blower and outdoor fan/compressor will energize. The system will run until the set temperature is satisfied.

Safety Controls (Automatic): High-pressure switch, low-pressure switch, compressor overload protector, and time-delay relay (typically 5 minutes) prevent short cycling.

Connecting to Indoor Unit

This unit must be matched with an approved American Standard indoor coil or air handler.

  1. Match System: Consult product literature for approved indoor models to achieve rated efficiency.
  2. Refrigerant Lines: Connect liquid and suction lines between units. Brazing must be done with nitrogen purge.
  3. Electrical Control: Connect low-voltage control wires (typically 24V) from indoor unit to outdoor unit terminal strip.
  4. Condensate Line: Ensure indoor coil drain line is properly installed and trapped.

Tip: A properly sized and installed line set is critical for system efficiency and longevity.

Maintenance Procedures

Regular maintenance is required for optimal performance and longevity. Disconnect all power before servicing.

  1. Outdoor Coil Cleaning: Annually, clean coil fins with a soft brush and gentle water spray from the inside out. Straighten any bent fins.
  2. Clear Debris: Keep area around unit clear of leaves, grass, and obstructions.
  3. Inspect Fan: Visually inspect fan blade for damage and ensure it spins freely.
  4. Electrical Inspection: Qualified technician should annually check electrical connections, contactor, and capacitors.
  5. Refrigerant Charge Check: Technician should verify charge annually, especially at the start of the cooling season.

WARNING! Do not use a pressure washer to clean the coil. Do not attempt to service refrigerant circuit—licensed professional only.

Safety Features

High/Low Pressure Switches: Automatically shut off compressor if refrigerant pressure is outside safe limits. Compressor Overload Protector: Internal protection against overheating. Time-Delay Relay: Prevents compressor from restarting for approximately 5 minutes after shutdown to protect it.

Care & Cleaning

Disconnect power at the disconnect switch before any cleaning. Keep the outdoor coil clean and free of debris. Wash the coil with a garden hose, spraying from the inside of the unit outward. Keep shrubbery at least 24 inches away for proper airflow.

CAUTION! Never insert sticks or tools into the fan grille while power is connected. Do not use chemical cleaners on the coil unless specified by the manufacturer.
