Installation Requirements

Unpack and inspect unit for shipping damage. Ensure proper location and clearances.

  1. Select location: Outdoor unit requires minimum clearances (24" sides, 48" front, 12" top).
  2. Prepare pad: Level, stable concrete pad or approved mounting system.
  3. Electrical connection: Requires dedicated circuit per local codes; disconnect within sight.
  4. Refrigerant lines: Connect to indoor coil using proper brazing and evacuation techniques.
  5. Condensate drain: Ensure proper drainage from indoor unit.
  6. Thermostat wiring: Connect communicating or conventional thermostat as specified.

WARNING! Installation must be performed by qualified HVAC technician. Electrical shock hazard exists. Follow all local codes and manufacturer instructions.

First-Time Startup

After installation, perform system commissioning and customer orientation.

  1. Power up system: Turn on disconnect switch and indoor unit power.
  2. Check refrigerant charge: Verify proper subcooling/superheat per charging chart.
  3. Test operation: Run in cooling and heating modes to verify proper function.
  4. Set thermostat: Program desired temperatures and schedules.
  5. Explain features: Show homeowner basic operation and filter maintenance.

CAUTION! Do not operate without proper refrigerant charge. Allow system to complete startup sequence before testing.

Specifications

Controls and Settings

Primary control through compatible thermostat. Unit has diagnostic LED and service test mode.

Thermostat Options: AccuLink Comfort Control II (communicating), conventional 24V thermostats with proper interface.

System Settings: Cooling setpoint, heating setpoint, fan mode (auto/on), system mode (cool/heat/auto/off), fan speed (auto/variable), schedule programming, humidity control, filter reminder. Service Settings: Test mode (activated by service switch), compressor speed adjustment, fault code display, system monitoring.

Connecting Thermostats & Accessories

Communicating thermostat: Uses 4-wire connection for full feature access. Conventional thermostat: May require interface module.

  1. Turn off power at disconnect before wiring.
  2. Match wires to terminal designations (R, C, Y1, Y2, O/B, G, etc.).
  3. For communicating systems: Use shielded cable and proper termination.
  4. Accessories: Connect humidifier, dehumidifier, or air cleaner per installation manual.

Tip: Use only American Standard approved thermostats for full functionality and warranty coverage.

Operating Modes

Provides cooling, heating (heat pump models), fan-only, and auto changeover operation.

  1. Cooling mode: Compressor runs to remove heat from indoor air.
  2. Heating mode (heat pump): Reverses refrigerant flow to heat indoor space.
  3. Auto mode: Automatically switches between heating and cooling based on setpoint.
  4. Fan mode: Circulates air without heating or cooling.
  5. Variable-speed operation: Automatically adjusts capacity for precise temperature control.
  6. Dehumidification: Enhanced moisture removal in cooling mode.
  7. Defrost cycle: Heat pump models automatically defrost outdoor coil in heating mode.

WARNING! Do not set thermostat to extreme temperatures. Allow system to complete cycles. Heat pump may not operate efficiently below certain outdoor temperatures.
